Album Of The Month: South Haven - Motion

I don't know who their PR people are, but they didn't get the word out all that well. I had no idea whatsoever this record was coming out. I'm glad I found it, though, since it's actually really good. It's not quite great, and it's a tad short, but there was more than enough about it for me to like. It's crunchy and catchy, and the two singers play well off each other. The only weird thing is that the song that's just vocals and a clean guitar sounds louder than the full band. Production fail, there. Otherwise, a pleaser.
I haven’t got round to it yet. I just haven’t been listening to a lot of new music this month.

The Good:

Ad Infinitum - Chapter I: Monarchy

Way better than Nightwish's album. This one might still bog down a bit in being overly dramatic, but it's tight, focused, and has plenty of nice melodies.
Very good even with her growls here and there.

Dynazty - The Dark Delight

I don't have much to say about it. Like always, it's solid pop-ish heavy power metal. They're good at what they do, but for whatever reason they never stick with me. Solid stuff, though.
I think it’s their best yet. Just an amazing record.

The Mediocre:

Katatonia - City Burials

This is not "The Fall Of Hearts". This is more experimental, and not all of it works. There are three or four songs with beautiful melodies and the trademark Katatonia gloom, but there's also a bunch of stuff that leans heavier on rhythms, with more traditionally metal guitar riffs. I miss the ringing melancholy chords. It's a half good/half meh album.
Haven’t heard and won’t as I have no interest in the band.
Volturian - Crimson

I was hoping this was going to be good, but it really wasn't. There's a couple of good songs, and a bunch that are just bland.
Haven’t heard.

Double Experience - Alignments

This came advertised as 'nerd rock', but it's not anything like what I would use that term for. It's watered-down, sort of third-rate Coheed & Cambria. Another one that doesn't outright suck, but isn't all that good either.
No clue or interest.

The Bad:

Testament - Titans Of Creation

I'm not a thrash guy, we've established, but even for thrash this does nothing for me. Chuck can sing, so him choosing to be this gruff through all of it is annoying. It gets old very quickly that everything is trying to be super heavy. With no dynamics, nothing sounds heavy.
Your opinion on thrash means diddly at this precise moment. This is however getting a lot of positive reviews saying it’s the best of the new era but I disagree personally. It’s no better than the last album IMO.

Nightwish - Human:II:Nature

But this is the worst album of the month. Tuomas barely writes melodies anymore, and why don't they use Floor more than they do? The best part of the band is often shunted to the side. It's weird, and stupid, and that's without even talking about the twenty-minute instrumental bit of indulgence. Yuck.
I’m not as hateful as you but whilst it has some merits, it is still a major let down.
