Let's do a couple of lists. We've done'm a million times but things change so here are my two current lists. First list is your current top 20 power metal albums of all time. The only rule is one album per band. You can give a one line reason why you like something just to create a bit of background.

20. Firewind - The Premonition
I wanted to include one Firewind album and I believe this is them at their most melodic.

19. Rage - Soundchaser
Definitely my fave Rage. Very heavy groovy and Peavy's vocals at their best.

18. Masterplan - Aeronautics
It's close between this and the debut but I just loved Aeronautics a little more.

17. Nightwish - Oceanborn
I haven't listened in an age but my first meeting with Nightwish remains my fave. Something naive and charming about them at this point and highly melodic. They hadn't yet fully been captured by the idea of creating over complex symphonies.

16. Iron Savior - Unification
I played this to literal death when it came out. Just loved it.

15. Bloodbound - Nosferatu
The debut Bloodbound remains the best despite the poor production. Urban was the man! More Maiden/Helloween than both those bands at that time.

14. Nocturnal Rites - tales of mystery and imagination
I played my casette of this to death in '97. I was just fascinated by the happy fun songs. The production was super muddy by today's standards but I just loved this and Zackrisson's melodies.

13. Helloween - Gambling WIth The Devil
Yes yes no keeper makes my llist. Just not a fan of old Helloween. I loved The Dark Ride but I think Gambling is their best effort of all. High quality heavy power metal and Deris turning in his best vocal.

12. ReinXeed - Welcome to the Theater
No one gave much of a shit but I absolutely adore this. Tommy is a genius for cartoonish power metal.

11. sabaton - The Art of War
Wasn't sure which Sabaton album to pick between Coat of Arms and this or Primo Victoria but went with this. Best song and every song a winner.

10. Hammerfall - Legacy of kings
Easily my fave Hammerfall album. Production tonnes better than debut. Every song very heavy metal.

09. Running Wild - The Rivalry
The start of the end for RW and many people say their last good album. I like what's come since but The Rivalry is just breathtakingly good old RW but with super polished sound.

08. Instanzia - Ghosts
Criminally ignored band from Canada. Superb songs but slightly weak sound. The fact they've been working on a follow up for a decade is a disaster. Their next album could have been amazing.

07. Majestica - Above The Sky
My mate Tommy is back with a spectacular release of happy melodic power.

06. Rhapsody - Symphony Of Enchanted lands
The Italians best and most inspired set of songs. They would slowly get more bombastic and heavier after this but this amount of cheese and melody was perfect for me.

05. Powerwolf - The Sacrament of Sin
Obviously the latest 'wolf album is the best, no doubt.

04. Sonata Arctica - Ecliptica
One of the most spectacular debut power metal albums ever. Stratovarius must've been mighty shocked when this was released!
03. Virgin Steele - Invictus
The most might and epic VS album of all. Epic length in each song and not a downer moment to be found all wrapped by with David's inspirational vocals.

02. Falconer - st
Well the Sonata debut was spectacular but the debut from Falconer is the best debut album in the power metal field of all time. Unique vocals and every song a winner.

01. Lost Horizon - A Flame to the Ground Beneath
And finally the monument that will stand for all eternity in power metal. The vocal gods, the power metal gods all aligned to deliver this insane piece of power metal music majesty. Having said all that I think the best was yet to come. The production values were only getting better but the band Lost Daniel Heiman and that was that. No other human on this earth could replace him and the banded folder after 2 albums.

This catergory is your top 20 metal songs. So you have wide expanse here. Any kind of metal song is allowed.

20. Rhapsody - Emerald Sword
Chorus chorus chorus!

19. Falconer - Lord Of The Blacksmiths
Probably my fave Falconer tune.

18. Candlemass - Samarithan
Hypnotic track. Not a huge fan of 'mass but this song is pure emotion.

17. Manowar - Heart of Steel
The only ballad in the list. Love Eric's voice in this emotional plodding ballad.

16. Morbid Angel - Immortal Rites
The opening riff barrage tells you all about the morbid ones.

15. Dream theater - Metroplis pt 1
The best prog metal song in history probably. Just an amazing song.

14. Sabaton - White Death
Strangely my fave Sabaton song. Just love this tune.

13. At The Gates - Slaughter Of The soul
Hard to choose between the first couple of tracks but I'll settle for this one. Big chorus and riffs to move mountains.

12. Virgin Steele - The Burning Of Rome
Easily my fave VS tune. Never get tired of hearing this. David sounds glorious on this song.

11. Savatage - Hall of the mountain king
Probably most people's fave Sava song. Can't go wrong with this classic heavy metal tune.

10. Dio - Holy Diver
Well it's either this or Rainbow In The Dark but this gets it. Classic.

09. Slayer - Angel of Death
Thrash masterpiece and of course THAT breakdown.

08. Testament - Disciples of the Watch
My fave Testament song. Love everything about it.

07. Judas Priest - Painkiller
The embodiment of what Priest is about.

06. Death - Perennial Quest
Definitely my fave Death song. Riffs, rollercoasters and emotions at the end. What a fitting end to the Symbolic album.

05. King Diamond - Welcome Home
My fave KD tune. Has all the ingredients that makes KD fun, theatrical and oh so heavy metal.

04. Metallica - Blackened
Best Metallica song ever. Riffs, riffs and more riffs.

03. Megadeth - Holy Wars...the Punishment Due
Best Megadeth song ever and you basically get two songs for the price of one in this riff fest to end all riff fests.

02. Iron Maiden - Hallowed Be Thy Name
I'm quite predictable here. Best and most dramatic Maiden song with the best riffs and emotions as the song builds.

01. Lost Horizon - Highlander (one)
The most epic power metal song ever created that's all I can say. It's like they thought let's make a song that reflects everything we're about and classic heavy metal is about and really flex our muscles and let the vocalist go nuts on the mic. And voila.. Highlander is the result...
